Veliko Turnovo is one of the must-see cities of Bulgaria. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Bulgaria. Its located somewhere near the center of Bulgaria – at just 220 km from both Varna and Sofia, at 160km from Romania`s capital Bucharest – it is great starting point for any trip.
The city itself is over a thousand years old and keeps unique medieval architecture in the streets in the old part of town. During the second Bulgarian Empire (1185 to 1422.) it was the Capital City of Bulgaria. The Veliko Tarnovo fortress is one of the main atractions of the city today.
Veliko Tarnovo is built on 3 Hills – The kings Hill – Tsarevets, where you can visit the ruins of the Fortress, Trapesitsa, where the bank of medieval Bulgaria and jewish neighbourhood was, and Sveta Gora, (Holy Wood) which resembled the Holy Wood on Mount Athos in Greece and had more than 50 monasteries and churches on its territory. Today Sveta Gora is a nice park to hang out and have picnic, but is also a nice pace to camp for free.
All houses in the old part of town are built on the hills and they are just a small part of the unique atmosphere the city has! The Yantra river runs along the whole city and surrounds the fortress from all 3 sides.
There are many not to miss events in Veliko Tarnovo. The most famous is the light show on Tsarevets hill that is made with different color illuminations and sound effects.
